Windscribe is an approachable VPN, firewall and ad block with also free options available. Usually we’d steer you away from any free services but this is not the case with Windscribe. Windscribe, hailing from Canada, is a very popular VPN among people who are just buying their first VPN or want to use a lightweight, but still skillfully protected VPN service. Windscribe has servers in about 50 countries around the world and while it may not offer the largest network of servers, all the servers are reliable and do their job just fine.
A free VPN?
Yes. With Windscribe you can use up to 10GB of data without paying a dime. This is one of the few VPN services offering a reliable free VPN as well. If you need more data, the prices are as follows:
With only $4.08 per month (yearly plan) the price is very affordable. It’s not a 2 or 3 year plan making it one of the cheapest 1-year-plans available (compared to for example NordVPN’s 1-year-plan which costs you $6.22 per month, or ExpressVPN’s $8.32 per month for a 1-year-plan). If you don’t want to buy a software for 2 to 3 years ahead Windscribe is a great service for you.
So how does it work?
I decided to try it out. Installation itself is very easy, after downloading the installation package you can just run an express installation and be done with it in under a minute. Windscribe will ask you to log in, and if you don’t have signed up yet, you can do it next on their website. Since I already have signed up, I just logged in and instantly got information about recommended server by Windscribe. As you can see, it’ll also show your unprotected IP address which I have here pixelated. On top right you can see your quota, which in my case is full 10GB since I haven’t yet connected Windscribe.
Next, you can select your server or go with the “Best Location”. As you can see, the server selection gives you a good list of different servers, including “Windflix US” server which allows you to see shows available on Netflix US.
With “Best Location” selected we can click the on button, and in a second your VPN is connected.
Fast VPN Server
The servers are fast with “Best Location” selected, you won’t notice a difference in basic web usage. You can see however that your IP address has now changed to the Windscribe IP address. Next we can test how fast the servers are with Speedtest.net. I’m actually kinda surprised how well Windscribe servers work, the Speedtest results are of course far from the fastest networks there are but for a VPN service this is pretty pretty good.
Next I decided to test out their Hong Kong VPN server as well, since it might interest some of our readers. Hong Kong is physically pretty far away and the connection from my end didn’t seem very promising, but the readings Speedtest gave are still OK. Of course the ping itself is very high, but for circumventing geoblocks for example the server works just fine.
Windscribe isn’t just a VPN but they offer highly functional ad blocking, port forwarding, split tunneling and what’s most interensting, R.O.B.E.R.T. R.O.B.E.R.T. is Windscribe’s completely one of a kind customisable tool for blocking domains and IP addresses. This helps you effectively block trackers and ads and stay protected online. It also keeps you safe from Internet viruses by blocking malicious domains automatically. Not only this adds to your overall safety online but it’ll make browsing faster blocking all the unnecessary stuff on the webpages, like ads and trackers. This means you’ll save on data as well since there are lots less of material to be downloaded to show you the website. If you have a limited data plan, this is a godlike feature! The tool is fully customisable so if you want to see for example fake news (that you can block with R.O.B.E.R.T. – Yes, seriously!) then you can leave it unchecked.
R.O.B.E.R.T. enhances your online privacy and safety to a whole new level. With plain VPN you’re practically still vulnerable to trackers and cryptomining for example, VPN just changes your IP address to something else. What Windscribe has done provides much more value to your VPN plan.
Overall Windscribe VPN works very well and with it’s free plan it is very easy to test it out yourself! Windscribe can be used for random, short periods of time or with paid plan it can be your number one VPN. With affordable prices it is very highly recommended by EasyVPNComparison!
